Tour of the Via Appia Antica - On the Via Dei Romani Between Rome and Naples

The Via Appia Antica, also called Regina Viarum, is one of the major roads built by the ancient Romans to connect Rome with the provinces of their empire. Built in 312 BC, it began at Porta Capena, near the Circus Maximus (Rome), and continued south until it reached Capua (province of Caserta). Later it was extended up to Benevento and then beyond the Apennines, up to Venosa and then to Taranto. Finally, before 191 BC, it was carried up to Brindisi, where two columns, one of which is still present, indicated the terminal point of the road. Today, with its 2300 years of history, the Appia Antica shows intact the signs of a past fascinating, in a continuous development between the "dark ages" of the Middle Ages, when it assumed the role of pilgrimage route because it bordered catacombs and because it led to Brindisi from where pilgrims embarked for the Holy Land, passing through the rediscovery in the Renaissance period, until the creation of the current open-air museum created in the mid-nineteenth century. The state-owned stretch of the Via Appia winds for a length of 12 km, evidence of the past that still animates this suggestive stretch of countryside, where no natural architectural barrier is placed between the visitor and the splendid view of the Castles. Today the Appia Antica is a Regional Park with 4,580 hectares of protected urban area (the largest in Europe) and is a candidate to be elected a Unesco World Heritage Site.

Historic yet vibrant street
This thoroughfare cuts through Naples’ old historic centre on a east-west direction, and for about 850 metres, you will be feasted with the vibrancy, color, cacophony and exhibits of Naples’ old world charms and modern quirkiness. Jostling for a position along this avenue amidst the shops and restaurants include the historic Naples Cathedral and San Lorenzo Maggiore Basilica. Quirkiness comes in the form of a Pulcinella Statue, live bands singing from a balcony, and Napoli FC’s colors bedecking the buildings in celebration of the club’s Serie A championship victory last season. It’s a shame that this cobblestone street is not fully pedestrianised, so watch out for the occasional cars and frequent vespas rumbling by.

Heart of the city
A great street full of colour, noise, and movement. Just saw a man serenading the street from his balcony. All of Napoli has the blue and white colours of their football team Napoli as they’ve won Serie A this year. The city has been buzzing over Easter and this is one of the best streets, if not the best, to stroll along

Busy but fun
Napolis historic center is a busy place. Full with countless souvenir shops, arts & craft shops, cafés, restaurants and wonderful churches.
It's a busy place, both locals and visitors are filling up the streets. It's bustling, it's lively. It's how you always imagined Napoli. So, if you're prepared for that and if it's that what you're looking for, then this is for you. We certainly enjoyed it.

Surely you should have a look at the Basilica di San Paolo Maggiore, the Chiesa di San Pietro a Majella, the Santa Maria delle Anime del Purgatorio ad Arco, the Chiesa dei Girolamini and the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta. You will pass them all on this street.

Food-wise you're in luck. Endless options. We had a Pizza Fritta for lunch. Classic food from Napoli. Yummy.

You could spend hours and just get lost in all the streets and lanes here. We surely did. The Via S. Gregorio Armeno is another - yet small - gem that you shouldn't miss. Especially if you're into arts & craft shops.

FREE ACTIVITY! Eat pizza in Napoli
No way to go to Naples and not wander around this area. There is so much to see and do and specially EAT!

Old building that could be renovated, some of them are in a state that there is no come back or won't last longer.
