Royal Palace Museum of Capodimonte - Tour with Guide

The National Museum of Capodimonte in Naples is located inside the Royal Palace of the same name, in the Capodimonte district and on 14,000 square meters and 124 galleries it houses one of the most important art galleries in Europe with galleries of ancient art, one of contemporary art and an apartment historic, more occasionally exhibits from around the world. The collections include works by the greatest names, from Titian to Raphael, from Michelangelo to Caravaggio, from Masaccio to Botticelli. Then again Mantegna, Rosso Fiorentino, Correggio, Parmigianino, Lotto, the Carracci brothers, Goya, Luca Giordano, Ribera, Artemisia Gentileschi and many others.

In itself the Reggia is a stupendous historical monument (it alone is already worth the ticket) which was the hillside residence and hunting reserve of the Kings of the Bourbon family. It was commissioned by Charles of Bourbon, son of Elizabeth and last descendant of the Farnese, to give worthy hospitality to the rich collection inherited from his mother and which was previously housed in the maternal palaces in Florence. Do not miss the Gallery of the beautiful Capodimonte Porcelain (envied and therefore copied all over the world) and the Porcelain sitting room.

A visit to the apartments of this Royal Palace allows a dive into the history of its protagonists from Charles of Bourbon who started the construction of the palace in 1738, to King Ferdinand IV who became king of Naples at just nine years old, passing through Ferdinand II who completed the of the palace, until the French decade when the palace, little inhabited by the Bourbon sovereigns, became a stable royal residence with the arrival of Carolina Bonaparte. Gioacchino Murat then built the road connecting with the city center and solved the problem of the water supply, and used the work of artists of the caliber of Antonio Canova for the plaster portrait of Letizia Ramolino Bonaparte. The building underwent a radical renovation starting from 1838 by Ferdinand II with the remaking of the decorations of the Ballroom and the 'Pompeian' bedroom of Francesco I and Maria Isabella, located in the southern wing and overlooks the sea of the Gulf of Naples.

The Royal Palace, in turn, is set within the Real Bosco (which can be visited) which covers an area of approximately 134 hectares with over 400 different plant species planted over the course of two centuries. Today it represents the largest green lung on the Gulf of Naples, but also one of the largest parks in Europe and one of the most interesting from a botanical point of view for the rare and exotic species it hosts, including camphor and camellias from Asia, magnolias and taxoda of the Americas and Australian eucalypts. The vast park was designed in 1734 by Ferdinando Sanfelice, who imagined two distinct sections in terms of style and function: the actual garden in the area around the Reggia, with large panoramic openings over the Gulf of Naples, and the hunting wood, scattered of statues, caves and buildings intended for different uses, such as the church, factories and farms.

  • Are the prices always the same even if the date changes?
Prices vary based on various factors which may be seasonal, day of the week, occupancy status of the hotel, promotions, particular fairs in the city and more. The advice, to see the prices, is to enter the dates of your stay and make your own comparisons.
  • Is breakfast always included?
No, it depends on the rate and whether the structure is organized to offer it or not. Check carefully before booking what is included and what is not and what type of service is offered.
  • Can I make special requests?
Of course, when booking you will have a field where you can write directly to the property and make your requests. These will be evaluated by the Hotel who will respond directly to you. MeTour is not responsible in this decision-making process.
  • What types of beds will I find in the room I booked?
The type of bed is usually specified in the room sheet. If you have any special requests or needs you can indicate them at the time of booking by writing them in the "special requests" field which will be forwarded directly to the property. In this process MeTour is not responsible.
  • What is Pay in Structural and Payment Pre-Authorization?
When you book, some facilities offer the possibility of paying directly at the facility. In these cases you will simply be asked to insert your credit (or debit) card to guarantee the booking, but without any charge. The sum will be taken from your credit card only in the cases provided for by the policies and conditions relating to your booking. In other cases, when the Partner does not adopt automatic availability and booking systems, but confirms reservations "manually", then you will be asked to insert your credit (or debit) card to guarantee the reservation, and then be directly charged at the same time as the Partner confirms the booking (within 24-48 hours). At that moment you will receive an email with the booking confirmation and payment.
  • How do I know if my card has been pre-authorized?
By consulting your credit card balance you will see that your available balance will be temporarily reduced by the amount of your reservation. In other cases and depending on the policy of your credit card circuit, you may also find an entry in the monthly summary of card movements: "pending operation". The pre-authorisation block, depending on the situation, will be maintained according to the policies and terms and conditions of what has been booked.
  • How can I cancel or change my booking?
Easy, enter the customer area with your credentials and from there you can modify or cancel your booking. Remember that changing dates or canceling with a refund request depends on the rate you chose when booking.
  • Can I transfer my reservation to another person?

  • How can I get help with my booking?
Enter the customer area with your credentials and from there you can contact us or by writing through our contact form specifying your booking number and the reason for the contact request. We recommend that you also leave a telephone number where you can be reached in case of need.
  • Are there taxes, local charges or extras to be paid directly on site?
If not clearly indicated in the booking rates or property policy, payments may be requested directly to the property for tourist taxes, local charges or extras not included in the rate. The advice is to read everything carefully before booking or writing to us through our contact form.

Bring a lot of time and a phone!
Bring a lot of time: this museum is huge! And a phone to help you reading the labels.

On the second floor there is currently an exhibition linked to Caravaggio. They brought a lot of paintings out of their storage for it.
On the first floor there is their permanent collection which also includes porcelain, statues, furniture and even whole rooms.
The third floor was closed. Why? No idea.

The museum is currently being renovated. I hope they will improve the lighting (a lot of glare on many paintings), the labels (way to small, only in Italian) and the toilets!

Good art
Repurposed palace into Museo Capodimonte. Even with many treasures on loan to the Louvre, there was much to see & enjoy. I especially liked the armory & De Ciccio collection. Also, less crowded than most places.

Beautiful art, access a little tricky
There are some stunning artworks on display at this huge gallery to the north of the city centre. Far too much to see in one visit. I wish I'd stuck to the 1st floor, which had some really interesting pieces. However, I was tempted by my timed access to the 2nd floor which you are ushered around in a group. Again, some fascinating pieces, but you can't go around at your own pace and so might be stuck in a room which doesn't interest you that much or moved out of one that does. Visitors with young children, and those with mobility issues were rather poorly served. This is no doubt a staffing issue as it only involved 2 people to show around 40 people rather than have a steward in each of the many rooms.
There are some marvellous things to see - recommended.

Worth a free Sunday visit
Excellent museum but annoyed at the lack of English translations and context given compared to the Archeological Museum. Still a lovely collection of art. Glad I went for free the first Sunday of the month.

Beautiful collection in a beautiful building in a beautiful park
This place is HUGE so it’s probably worth looking at the floorplan and targeting what you want to prioritize in case you get too tired to see the whole collection. Like most of the art museums in Naples, the preponderance of the collection is Neapolitan Baroque and after awhile it started to look the same, but it’s still a solid collection in a really elegant, ornate space. The park outside looked gorgeous as well, but unfortunately we didn’t have time to explore it.
