Inside
The house
The 130-year-old former stable was converted into a residential building in 1976, which is characterised by its open and functional architecture. Many elements, including the kitchen and bathroom, have been preserved in their original state. The house has a collection of simple, timeless pieces of furniture, many of which have become classics of modern home design.
The house has three bedrooms: one room with a double bed, one room with two single beds and one room with a bunk bed (suitable for children). On the same level are the kitchen and bathroom as well as a beautiful, bright living room with a free-standing fireplace. A gallery serves as a retreat where you can work or where children can spread out. In the basement there is a sauna and a cold water tub to cool off after sweating. The outdoor area consists of a large, covered balcony and plenty of green space with various seating areas.
The house is heated by a warm air fireplace. Electric heating is also available. Children are welcome if they are sure-footed. If possible, you should bring your own bed linen and towels, but they can also be provided by arrangement.
Location and surroundings
The holiday home is located in the Alto Ticino region, more precisely in the central Leventina, at just under 1,000 metres above sea level in a village above Faido. The Leventina Valley lies to the south of the Gotthard Pass and is situated between two worlds, so to speak. Due to the great difference in altitude within the valley and the striking location of the pass, there are major climatic changes, which ensure a great diversity of plants: palm trees, vineyards and dense coniferous forests are lined up close together and create a varied landscape.
Activities
The village is ideal for exploring the Alps and the Gotthard region. Day trips to Bellinzona, Locarno, Lugano, Lake Como or Milan are also easily possible.
Spring/Summer/Autumn
These seasons are perfect for hiking, biking and climbing. With the bouldering areas in Creciano and Chironico, the Leventina has two legendary climbing areas. Bouldering fans from all over the world come here. The reason for this is not only the fantastic rock, but also the mild climate of Ticino. Bouldering for beginners and children is possible in the outdoor bouldering centre in Faido.
The biking and hiking options are varied. A technically easy bike tour leads through the Bedretto Valley, while a technically interesting circular trail with views of the Pizzo Campo Tencia starts from Molare. There is a great pump track for children in Faido.
A beautiful hiking area is right on the doorstep. The Strada Alta, the panoramic high-level trail from Airolo to Biasca (part of the Trans Swiss Trail) or the Sentiero dei Monti are all pleasant walks. More challenging mountain hikes lead over the Bassa di Nara into the Blenio Valley or over the Passo Predelp into the Valle Santa Maria to Aquacalda.
Nearby excursion destinations include the beautiful Val Piora, the mysterious Lago Tremorgio or the Romanesque buildings in Giornico.
In the high valley of Val Piora there are three lakes: Lago Ritom (incl. nature trail), Lago Cadagno and Lago di Tom (with a great sandy beach). You can eat at the Ristoro Taneda, where the Pioradoro cured ham matures at almost 2,000 metres above sea level. High above the Leventina, the Sentiero Alto del Tremorgio also leads from the Pesciüm mountain station near Airolo through sparse mountain forest and romantic landscapes to the mountain lake of Tremorgio with a descent to Prato or a descent to Rodi. With its old stone houses, cobbled streets and two impressive arched bridges over the Ticino, Giornico is the best-preserved village in the Leventina. Here you will find one of the most important religious buildings in Ticino, the beautiful Romanesque church of San Nicola - one of several Romanesque masterpieces in the Leventina - with excellently preserved medieval frescoes. You can stop off at the Grotto Dei Due Ponti.
Swimming is the order of the day in the hot season. In addition to Lake Maggiore (e.g. at Shaka Beach in Vira Gambarogno), there are numerous smaller bathing spots nearby that you can explore. These include the Piumogna waterfall in Faido, the Ticino at the Ponte della Vicinanza at the exit of the Piottino Gorge, the natural pools of the Santa Petronilla waterfall above Biasca, or the natural bathing pond Pozzone di Osogna, where you can enjoy a refreshment afterwards in the Grotto al Pozzón.
Winter
The winter sports resort of Cari is just a few kilometres from the Rustico and has 2 chairlifts. The first starts at 1,600 metres above sea level and leads to the middle station at 2,000 metres above sea level and the Osteria Belvedere. The second, 4-seater chairlift, which is only open in winter, goes up to Lèi di Carì at 2,300 metres above sea level. From here, 20 km of fantastic ski pistes lead back down to the valley via a sun-drenched slope.
The ski area is family-friendly and has moderate prices. The area also offers many winter hiking trails for all those who want to enjoy a walk in the snow and nature.
How to get there
Car: The house is directly accessible by car. There are two free car parks directly above the Rustico, next to the waste disposal point on the road. If these are occupied, the free public car park above the village can be used (150 metres). In such cases, you can park briefly at the waste disposal centre to load and unload.
Train: There is a direct train connection from Zurich to Faido. The journey takes 2 hours 15 minutes. In Faido, take the postbus in the direction of Predelp or Carì. The line is open all year round, but is limited to 8 journeys per day. The bus stop in Primadengo is 30 metres from the Rustico. Alternatively, you can walk from Faido railway station to the Rustico. The 45-minute route leads mostly through the forest, so it is also doable in the hot season. It is only 2 kilometres, but you cover 250 metres in altitude.
