Hotel Astoria

Coimbra - Portugal

Map
The Astória is an Art Nouveau-Art Déco masterpiece with the romance and grace of a different century, and has been one of Coimbra´s main architectural gems for almost a century. If you just want a comfortable hotel in Coimbra, with an excellent central location - adjacent to the downtown shopping district and close to the famous university and all the historic monuments - and with great river views, the Astória is an excellent choice.

If, in addition, you like architecture, this hotel is a dream come true : it was built in the 1920's and although it has some modern comfort, the style, interior and exterior, was kept intact. The furniture, decoration, even the elevator, are gloriously original. Entering the hotel is entering a bygone era: a fascinating experience .The marble lobby is amazing and so is the grand paneled restaurant and the charming living room left from the front desk and the elevator.
Everything is so original that you have the feeling that you have the feeling that you arrived in a scene from the Great Gatsby and that is awesome! So, if you like Art Déco style you will love the furniture even if the bed might be creaky or the tiles old. You will forget these small details when you have the beautiful view of the Mondego from the small balcony or when you eat breakfast at the glorious époque restaurant.

The Astória has been family-run for three generations, providing an intimate and comfortable atmosphere delivered with a personal touch that's usually absent in non top-class hotel chains. Our Guests hope that such family chains will continue to exist and give their personal local rather than a global touch, something different from boring hotels that could be anywhere in the world.
It definitely isn't an hotel for someone who loves all the modern conveniences the world has to offer these days, but if you appreciate old world things and enjoy taking a trip in a time warp ... you will adore this hotel and fall in love with Coimbra.

Every destination, package and service offered has been carefully selected to ensure an unparalleled travel experience. Furthermore, our expert team is always on hand to assist you at every stage of your journey, ensuring that every detail is taken care of to perfection.
  • Are the prices always the same even if the date changes?
Prices vary based on various factors which may be seasonal, day of the week, occupancy status of the hotel, promotions, particular fairs in the city and more. The advice, to see the prices, is to enter the dates of your stay and make your own comparisons.
  • Is breakfast always included?
No, it depends on the rate and whether the structure is organized to offer it or not. Check carefully before booking what is included and what is not and what type of service is offered.
  • Can I make special requests?
Of course, when booking you will have a field where you can write directly to the property and make your requests. These will be evaluated by the Hotel who will respond directly to you. MeTour is not responsible in this decision-making process.
  • What types of beds will I find in the room I booked?
The type of bed is usually specified in the room sheet. If you have any special requests or needs you can indicate them at the time of booking by writing them in the "special requests" field which will be forwarded directly to the property. In this process MeTour is not responsible.
  • What is Paga in Structural and what are Payment Pre-Authorisations?
When you book, some facilities offer the possibility of paying directly at the facility. In these cases you will simply be asked to insert your credit (or debit) card to guarantee the booking, but without any charge. The sum will be taken from your credit card only in the cases provided for by the policies and conditions relating to your booking. In other cases, when the Partner does not adopt automatic availability and booking systems, but confirms reservations "manually", then you will be asked to insert your credit (or debit) card to guarantee the reservation, and then be directly charged at the same time as the Partner confirms the booking (within 24-48 hours). At that moment you will receive an email with the booking confirmation and payment.
  • How do I know if my card has been pre-authorized?
By consulting your credit card balance you will see that your available balance will be temporarily reduced by the amount of your booking. In other cases and depending on the policy of your credit card circuit, you may also find an entry in the monthly summary of card movements: "pending operation". The pre-authorization block, depending on the situation, will be maintained according to the policies and terms and conditions of what has been booked.
  • How can I cancel or change my booking?
Easy, enter the customer area with your credentials and from there you can modify or cancel your booking. Remember that changing dates or canceling with a refund request depends on the rate you chose when booking.
  • Can I transfer my reservation to another person?
For this request, contact the property directly which may have a specific policy in this regard or may need further data on the person to whom you want to transfer the booking.
  • How can I get help with my booking?
Enter the customer area with your credentials and from there you can contact us or by writing through our contact form specifying your booking number and the reason for the contact request. We recommend that you also leave a telephone number where you can be reached in case of need.
  • Are there taxes, local charges or extras to be paid directly on site?
They are normally clearly indicated in the property sheet or added during the booking phase depending on local regulations or the facility's policies. But even if not clearly indicated, payments may be requested directly to the facility for any tourist taxes, local charges or extras not included in the rate. The advice is to read everything carefully before booking or writing to us through our contact form.
  • Are small pets allowed?
It is often clearly stated in the property sheet and for this reason we invite you to carefully read their policies. Where not indicated, we invite you to contact us through our contact form for more information.

  • What are TripAdvisor reviews?
TripAdvisor reviews on MeTour.it are ratings and comments imported directly from TripAdvisor for each hotel, B&B, resort, campsite, accommodation, restaurant and museum activity you find on our site. They include an overall rating of up to 5 points, the total number of reviews, and detailed ratings for specific categories such as rooms, location, cleanliness, sleep quality, service and value for money. We also show the latest 5 reviews left by travelers on TripAdvisor. This data is automatically updated and is provided to help our users make informed choices. MeTour.it does not edit these reviews and takes no responsibility for their accuracy.

Astoria amazing
Charming. Yes, it is a little old fashioned but as it sails serenely towards its 100th birthday we found it a lovely antidote to the identikit modernity offered by so many tourist hotels. The location is just about perfect for travellers as it's only a few minutes walk from both the railway station and the main street. The staff are superb; welcoming and a very good source of information if required.

Avoid
Avoid this hotel. Build in the 1920's, the ownership still haven't left that decade. There is NO internet in the rooms (even most hostels have that) no kettles or coffee facilities either and if you don't pay for the breakfast, there is simply no coffee or tea. Our room which was a superior one with a view and balcony overlooking the river was freezing! We did have a heater but it was too small for the room. The bathroom which was seperate, had no heat at all. When the outside temperature is 5c, it's really cold!

Although the building is magnificent, it needs a complete refurbishing, which hasn't been done in decades.

The one positive note is the front desk staff. They were incredibly polite, professional and very personable.

Classic and Quirky
This is a nice hotel for those who appreciate classic, historic places. The location is excellent for the main things in Coimbra. The elevator is touch and go, so we used it to take our bags up then used the stairs. The wi-fi was out for our whole visit, even though we were told it would be fixed in a few hours. Breakfast is quite good. There is a parking garage nearby, but it is expensive and a nightmare to drive around it. We like the honor bar where you get your own drink and drop out your filled-out form at the front desk.

We will return to this stunning hotel
This hotel is a throwback in time. A stunning work of art. Don’t expect flashy kitch, don’t expect modern amenities- place yourself in the 1930’s.
Plus an excellent breakfast is offered in a dining room that is full of character.

Centrally located, excellent riverside views from our small balcony.

Train station and bus stops just a few short steps from the front door.

Delightful patisserie to the left of the main door in the left again next pedestrian street one over.

Extremely pleasant and helpful staff at reception.

And what a wonderful city - marvellous views from the university on the hill ( take the bus) and a stroll back to the river by way of the botanical gardens.

Mystery and intrigue!
My tour group stayed here and I loved it. This 100 plus year old hotel is quirky and interesting. It has old world charm with it's lack of modernity. Don't expect all the mod cons but go with an open mind. The hotel dates back to 1926 and has old fashioned furnishings and feels like a step back in time. Spacious rooms and an interesting history. Get the staff to tell you about hidden doorways and underground rooms...I won't spoil it but we found the hidden doorways! I wish they did tours of the place.

Breakfast was standard for Europe- all the usual bits. Elevator is cool, as mentioned in other reviews. The hotel has historic pictures all around the place. Wifi works best in the lobby- hit and miss in the rooms, is not a strong signal. I could open stuff but not access websites!

I really enjoyed this hotel and would so love to explore the 'hidden' bits, or read up on the history!! Would be good if the hotel had more info about the place to share.

On y reviendra volontiers.
