Palace Hotel do Bussaco

Luso - Portugal

Map
Be a Guest at the Palace of the Portuguese Kings, an authentic royal fairy tale castle in an enchanted forest.

The Bussaco Palace has all the features of the dreamer’s “romantic palace” - set in the heart of the glorious Bussaco National Park, high on a hill, and resplendent in its decorative Manueline-Gothic architecture, this legendary Palace was built for the last King of Portugal in 1885, converted into a deluxe hotel in 1917, and is nowadays one of the most beautiful and historic hotels in the world.

Here you will enjoy the unique experience of staying in a veritable royal palace surrounded by formal gardens in the center of the magnificent woods, formed by 250 acres of centuries old walled ‘Bos Sacrum ´planted by the ecologically minded Order of the Barefoot Carmelites in the 17th century , as a holy hermitage dedicated to withdrawal and uplift.

The Bussaco Forest is renowned by arborists worldwide for its incredible array of exotic trees and species of rare flora collected all over the world by Portuguese Navigators. The Monastery of the Holy Cross, dating from 1630, the diversity of chapels, hermitages and belvederes in the forest, and the walking paths through the Stations-of-The-Cross, as well as all the landscape architecture introduced in the middle of the 19th century by Queen Maria Pia of Savoy, fore last Queen of Portugal, and daughter of Victor Emmanuel II of Italy, with the creation of the Valley of the Ferns and the construction of the Cold Fountain, still exemplify the rarefied atmosphere of serenity and peace of this very special place. The strong aromas of conifers, hedges and flora, combined in the early morning, make the air in Bussaco just incredible and unforgettable. If you can find peace and romantic tranquility there, then you may never find it anywhere...

Every destination, package and service offered has been carefully selected to ensure an unparalleled travel experience. Furthermore, our expert team is always on hand to assist you at every stage of your journey, ensuring that every detail is taken care of to perfection.
  • Are the prices always the same even if the date changes?
Prices vary based on various factors which may be seasonal, day of the week, occupancy status of the hotel, promotions, particular fairs in the city and more. The advice, to see the prices, is to enter the dates of your stay and make your own comparisons.
  • Is breakfast always included?
No, it depends on the rate and whether the structure is organized to offer it or not. Check carefully before booking what is included and what is not and what type of service is offered.
  • Can I make special requests?
Of course, when booking you will have a field where you can write directly to the property and make your requests. These will be evaluated by the Hotel who will respond directly to you. MeTour is not responsible in this decision-making process.
  • What types of beds will I find in the room I booked?
The type of bed is usually specified in the room sheet. If you have any special requests or needs you can indicate them at the time of booking by writing them in the "special requests" field which will be forwarded directly to the property. In this process MeTour is not responsible.
  • What is Paga in Structural and what are Payment Pre-Authorisations?
When you book, some facilities offer the possibility of paying directly at the facility. In these cases you will simply be asked to insert your credit (or debit) card to guarantee the booking, but without any charge. The sum will be taken from your credit card only in the cases provided for by the policies and conditions relating to your booking. In other cases, when the Partner does not adopt automatic availability and booking systems, but confirms reservations "manually", then you will be asked to insert your credit (or debit) card to guarantee the reservation, and then be directly charged at the same time as the Partner confirms the booking (within 24-48 hours). At that moment you will receive an email with the booking confirmation and payment.
  • How do I know if my card has been pre-authorized?
By consulting your credit card balance you will see that your available balance will be temporarily reduced by the amount of your booking. In other cases and depending on the policy of your credit card circuit, you may also find an entry in the monthly summary of card movements: "pending operation". The pre-authorization block, depending on the situation, will be maintained according to the policies and terms and conditions of what has been booked.
  • How can I cancel or change my booking?
Easy, enter the customer area with your credentials and from there you can modify or cancel your booking. Remember that changing dates or canceling with a refund request depends on the rate you chose when booking.
  • Can I transfer my reservation to another person?
For this request, contact the property directly which may have a specific policy in this regard or may need further data on the person to whom you want to transfer the booking.
  • How can I get help with my booking?
Enter the customer area with your credentials and from there you can contact us or by writing through our contact form specifying your booking number and the reason for the contact request. We recommend that you also leave a telephone number where you can be reached in case of need.
  • Are there taxes, local charges or extras to be paid directly on site?
They are normally clearly indicated in the property sheet or added during the booking phase depending on local regulations or the facility's policies. But even if not clearly indicated, payments may be requested directly to the facility for any tourist taxes, local charges or extras not included in the rate. The advice is to read everything carefully before booking or writing to us through our contact form.
  • Are small pets allowed?
It is often clearly stated in the property sheet and for this reason we invite you to carefully read their policies. Where not indicated, we invite you to contact us through our contact form for more information.

They include an overall rating of up to 5 points, the total number of reviews, and detailed ratings for specific categories such as rooms, location, cleanliness, sleep quality, service and value for money. We also show the latest 5 reviews left by travelers on TripAdvisor. This data is automatically updated and is provided to help our users make informed choices. MeTour.it does not edit these reviews and takes no responsibility for their accuracy.

A palace hotel
An amazing historical hotel built by the last king of Portugal in 1810 amidst a magnificent forest. The decoration is incredible. Good service, excellent breakfast in an unparalleled setting. The place is one of its kind. Not to be compared with a modern 5star hotel built last year (if it were, the price would be three times higher). This is a place full of history with has an “olde worlde” atmosphere. If you can afford it, go for it.

A excellent choice!
Wonderful place to stay. Truly relaxing and just a short drive to Cuimbra. Employees were outstanding with suggestions and high quality service. Rooms are not as ornate as the Palace itself, but large and very comfortable.

The most beautiful Hotel I have ever stayed in / Ein Erlebnis, das ich nicht missen möchte
The Hotel is the old hunting residence of one of the last kings of Portugal and it feels like it. You can spend days just marveling at the craftsmanship of the Palace, as it is beautifully build. There are regular conservation efforts on the interior too, so the halls have lost none of their grandeur. The Furniture is beautiful and the classical tiling is worth a trip on it's own. The surrounding park is well kept and seamlessly opens to a forest hiking-route. There are tourists visiting the Park and hiking routes, but the hotel is kept strictly for guests only.
Keep in mind, that the hotel is situated in it's own park on a countryside hill. We made a daytrip to nearby Coimbra, but don't expect to quickly reach much hustle and bustle.
I can't support the negative reviews about the staff. The personnel is friendly and respectful with manners and training fitting a five-star-hotel in an old royal palace (which might be mistaken for "distanced" or "cold", but a warm hug just doesn't do in this setting).
The breakfast was very good and served in the mein dinner hall and adjacent balcony. You can book a table for dinner or drive to the town outside the Park for a number of small restaurants.
We spend multiple evenings in the parlour, as the room is simply gorgeous and the bar and service are spotless.
The rooms are grand and a bit away from the main halls. As some wings of the building have been renovated more recently than others the experience here may vary between good and splendid. We had no complaints to make of our room.
I hope I get to visit this place again.

A wacky wonder
Encased in a stunning exterior and surrounded by beautiful grounds, this hotel is a time warp into bygone elegance. Opulently carved wood and stunning ceilings abound. The stain glass will take your breath away. But be prepared for some nuttiness: no internet in your room; water stains on silk wallpaper; dusty menus from long dead royal guests; peeling paint on the windows sealed with fabric window snake/draft dampeners; and a knight standing guard on the marble stair case with glowing eyes. Seriously. They glow. None of these are criticisms, merely facts that added to the entire fun that was this place. PS The Christmas Eve dinner is opulently bonkers too - ten courses and then a dessert buffet complete with port and champagne. Get ready to imbibe and stuff yourself. Also, be sure to hike all over the grounds and see the heirloom chickens, the waterfalls and the medieval gates. There's nothing else like this in Portugal that we found during our two week adventure.

Noble Living
Eye Popping. Approaching this Palacial Hotel on top of a mountain in the fog is a cinematic experience. Talk about making a huge impression. You truly feel like you are entering a different dimension. Beautiful, awesome lobby, staircase, lodge and dining room. These are the pluses and they more than compensate for the slight inconveniences of castle life...like very few outlets and no AC. The rooms have high ceilings and doors that lead to the turreted terrace that wraps around the hotel and provides views of the spacious grounds. It's not just accommodations, but an experience.

No había sitio.

Ahí va mi segundo consejo: MIRA CON OTROS OJOS.

On reviendra.

5 Sterne!!!!
Jedoch sehr gutes Restaurant, sauber, freundliches Personal.Top Lage.

Mi auguro che resti così ancora molto a lungo...

Presa in giro
