Napoli: Visita Guidata Museo Monumentale Donnaregina

Largo Donnaregina - Napoli - Italy

Have you ever thought of visiting a simple Museum and instead you happened to live an experience in History, Art, Beauty that leaves you surprised and enchanted? Well this is what happens to those who visit the Diocesan Museum of Naples housed in the Donnaregina Monumental Complex!
Then, with our Expert Guide, explore the Historical Elegance and Artistic Wealth of the Museo Diocesano Complesso Monumentale Donnaregina in Naples. Here you will visit the Historical Elegance and Artistic Wealth of a wonderful and historic Monument, a true Cultural Gem in the Historic Center of Naples (next to the Cathedral dedicated to the Patron Saint San Gennaro), and, at the same time, for the price of a single ticket, you will also immerse yourself in an incredible Museum Journey testifying to the history and wealth of the Church of Naples over the centuries, an art treasure chest with paintings, sculptures, unique finds of its kind and very precious in history and value.

What will you do

You will visit, accompanied by one of our expert guides, the Donnaregina Monumental Complex in Naples, a unique testimony in the Neapolitan historic center of the redundant and rich baroque decoration. Founded as a Franciscan monastic complex, evidence of the ancient convent and of the two original churches, the medieval one and the seventeenth-century one connected together, until the thirties of the twentieth century, by a corridor that linked past and present, allowing the Poor Clares to move without leaving the cloistered places. You will visit the Church of Santa Maria Donnaregina Vecchia, which has been witnessed since 780, part of a convent that has hosted Italian-Greek, Basilian, Benedictine and finally Franciscan nuns over the centuries. Destroyed by a violent earthquake in 1293, it was adopted by the wife of Charles II of Anjou, Maria of Hungary, who rebuilt it in Gothic style, asking that her own sepulcher be housed in the church (a magnificent monument created by the Sienese sculptor Tino di Camaino and Gagliardo Primario). The frescoes in the choir, although reddish because they were altered by a fire, constitute the largest and most interesting fourteenth-century cycle preserved in Naples. Also in the choir you can admire the wooden box with the Coronation of the Virgin created by the Bergamo sculptor Pietro Belverte at the beginning of the 16th century and the wooden stalls, from the same period, coming from San Lorenzo. The church also preserves Renaissance frescoes in the lower parts of the choir and two Crucifixions on the sides of the apse.

We will then move on to the visit of the second Church of Santa Maria Donnaregina (the New one) decided at the beginning of the 17th century in Baroque style by the Poor Clares, who were staying in the monastery at the time. Here work began in 1617 with the participation of the most prestigious artists of the time. The construction was of such magnificence that, even today, climbing the majestic staircase of Piperno you can admire the exuberant nave of the church, covered with polychrome marble and the vault entirely frescoed with the Glory of the Virgin; This magnificence is completed by a fresco by the young Francesco Solimena representing the Miracle of the Roses of Saint Francis and next to the main altar, some canvases by the baroque painter Luca Giordano.

In the meantime, we will visit the 2 churches of the Complex, we will be accompanied along the historical itinerary offered by the Diocesan Museum: here you will admire an eclectic collection of works of art, including tables, canvases, frescoes, sculptures, gold, silver, paintings, sculptures and historical artifacts that range from the Middle Ages to the modern era. Each room tells fascinating stories of monks, artists and historical figures who have left their mark on this unique place. It unfolds inside the baroque church where works of great value are exhibited, such as the Annunciation and the Immaculate Conception of 1646, by Charles Mellin from Lorraine, or Saint Francis who receives the symbols of beatification and holiness, a rare iconography of the Solimena or even the tender Madonna and Child by Massimo Stanzione, placed in the sacristy. The museum itinerary addresses significant themes of the Christian faith lived and manifested in the Neapolitan Church and that is why there is no lack of representation of 'Saint Gennar', patron of Naples and the depiction of 'Mary', a model of life for Christians.
The Museum, through the works exhibited on 3,000 square meters, allows a real journey into the Christian faith, thanks to formidable painters such as Andrea Vaccaro, Paolo de Matteis and Luca Giordano; but also, in the Flemish Teodoro d'Errico, in Francesco Solimena, Aniello Falcone, and Marco Pino da Siena.
In addition, entering the Museum, which covers 3000 square meters, you can discover, in the Sala dei Preziosi, the rare 12th century Stauroteca, which holds a fragment of the Cross of Christ and the 14th century tempera panel with a gold background, which represents a portrait of the archbishop of Naples Umberto d'Ormont.

What to expect

The Donnaregina Monumental Complex Museum is much more than just a museum. It is a dive into the past, an opportunity to discover the traces left by the centuries, to be inspired by artistic beauty and to embrace the cultural heritage of Naples. It is a place to visit for: Art lovers who want to explore masterpieces from different eras, History lovers who want to experience the past through architectural and artistic testimonies, curious travelers looking for places that tell the story of a city... but also simple lovers of beauty looking for something unique in the world!

  • Are the prices always the same even if the date changes?

  • Is breakfast always included?
No, it depends on the rate and whether the structure is organized to offer it or not. Check carefully before booking what is included and what is not and what type of service is offered.
  • Can I make special requests?
Of course, when booking you will have a field where you can write directly to the property and make your requests. These will be evaluated by the Hotel who will respond directly to you. MeTour is not responsible in this decision-making process.
  • What types of beds will I find in the room I booked?
The type of bed is usually specified in the room sheet. If you have any special requests or needs you can indicate them at the time of booking by writing them in the "special requests" field which will be forwarded directly to the property. In this process MeTour is not responsible.

When you book, some facilities offer the possibility of paying directly at the facility. In these cases you will simply be asked to insert your credit (or debit) card to guarantee the booking, but without any charge. The sum will be taken from your credit card only in the cases provided for by the policies and conditions relating to your booking. In other cases, when the Partner does not adopt automatic availability and booking systems, but confirms reservations "manually", then you will be asked to insert your credit (or debit) card to guarantee the reservation, and then be directly charged at the same time as the Partner confirms the booking (within 24-48 hours). At that moment you will receive an email with the booking confirmation and payment.
  • How do I know if my card has been pre-authorized?
By consulting your credit card balance you will see that your available balance will be temporarily reduced by the amount of your booking. In other cases and depending on the policy of your credit card circuit, you may also find an entry in the monthly summary of card movements: "pending operation". The pre-authorization block, depending on the situation, will be maintained according to the policies and terms and conditions of what has been booked.

Complesso Monumentale Donnaregina

Beautiful, just beautiful
I don’t speak Italian, so I am writing in English. This was the most beautiful exhibition that I saw in Naples. The church is beautiful, and the paintings were so exceptionally beautiful, I almost cried, really. (Mainly the Flagellation of Christ of course) Thank you for this experience!

It’s more a 4+ to 5 star church complex
The church, itself, is very impressive, although not at the very, very top ranks. The chapels lining the walls were pretty and well-executed. The altar area is extremely well done and attractive. The ceiling is also very nice and the choir, upstairs, overlooking the church is exceptional, with many fine frescoes and a closer view of the ceiling. The cloister is not a garden area, but a small tiled square, pretty unusual. There are other rooms with some nice paintings, frescoes, sculptures, archaeological and structural elements, as well. The small galleries are not great, but have a handful of good paintings and other items. In toto, we found it an excellent stop, made particularly fascinating by the young lady working there who gave some excellent commentary. Including in it the fact that the church was turned into a museum to prevent ongoing thefts of materials from the complex. We spent over an hour here and if we had more available, would probably have doubled that. It’s a shame how few people were there viewing this worthwhile site, but it has a great deal of competition for the tourist’s time in Naples, not least of which were the many fine churches and church complexes that inhabit this large and ancient city. We saw only a fraction of them. One can easily spend 2-3 worthwhile days perusing these alone and feel justified in visiting this fascinating city.

Quiet, beautiful, and nicely curated
This museum doesn’t have the most amazing artworks, but they are displayed and explained in such a way that makes it a really nice museum to explore. We had the place virtually to ourselves and enjoyed walking through the beautiful spaces. We also really appreciated how the works were often organized by theme and the focus was on their religious symbolism.

Amazing experience! Strongly recommend!
We went there to see the works from Aniello Falcone and were delighted to find more than what we were expecting. An amazing church, inside an even more beautiful one. Then, we were not disappointed in any way from the museum part neither... Definitely worth the shot!
My suggestion tho is to consider the time for the visit, including the museum, of at least 2 hours and not remotely close to 1 hour as they say.
Overall a great experience!

Not to be missed
An amazing place. A must if you are in Naples. The church itself is worth a visit but until May 1st, there is the additional bonus of seeing the paintings of Aniello Falcone, a XVIIth century Neapolitan painter, friend of Velazquez. We had an exteaordinary guide yesterday, learned and passionate, and the tour she gave us was included in the price of the ticket. Do not miss it.

Museo diocesano

A VISITER IMPERATIVEMENT !!!!
